Abstract

Purpose

Advancement and disruptions in technologies have attracted cyberentrepreneurs globally, but what factors influence their intentions is an area that requires in-depth investigation. In order to dig down the phenomenon of cyberentrepreneurial intentions (CEIs), this study entails investigation of both direct and indirect effects (through cyberentrepreneurial self-efficacy; CESE) of the dark personality traits (e.g. Machiavellianism, narcissism and psychopathy). It also aims to investigate the moderating role of positive thinking (PT) on the association between CESE and CEIs.

Design/methodology/approach

Data are collected, using personally administrated questionnaires, from students enrolled in business and information technology (IT) programs in large public sector universities in three waves to tackle common method bias. A total of 641 useful responses were considered for analysis purposes.

Findings

The results reveal that not all dark triad dimensions influence CEIs and CESE. Narcissism is the only positive predictor of both the outcome variables (CESE and CEIs). Specifically, psychopathy positively influences CEIs, while its effects on CESE are negative; whereas Machiavellianism does not predict CESE, however, it negatively influences CEIs. In addition, CESE mediates the association between narcissism and CEIs; however, PT strengthens the relationship between CESE and CEIs.

Research limitations/implications

The study collected data from a country with low entrepreneurs; therefore, results may vary for countries with a large number of entrepreneurs. The findings of the study offer both theoretical and practical implications, while it highlights the role of dark personality traits and their link with the CESE and CEIs.

Originality/value

There is a dearth of literature on CEIs, which this study extends through the dark personality traits (Machiavellianism, narcissism and psychopathy). This study also explored the mediating mechanism of CESE and the conditional role of PT between dark personality traits and CEIs.

Abstract

Purpose

Knowledge is the source of competitive advantage, but when shared at all levels. Unfortunately, there is a universal unruly present in the form of knowledge hiding at employees’ level, but the causes and remedies are still vague as past studies have rarely investigated the causes of daily knowledge hiding behavior. Against this backdrop, this study aims to entail a daily diary method investigation of the role of daily abusive supervision in daily employees’ knowledge hiding through the mediation of dehumanization and moderation of psychological capital.

Design/methodology/approach

The data for this study is collected using a daily diary method approach, which estimates the daily workplace events and their continuous influence on employees’ feelings (i.e. dehumanization) and actions (knowledge hiding). The daily responses of 279 respondents were considered useful for analysis purposes.

Findings

The findings of the study revealed that the daily events of abusive supervision have both direct and indirect (through dehumanization) influence on employees’ daily knowledge hiding behavior. Moreover, psychosocial capital has a significant conditional influence in the relationships of negative workplace treatments (abusive supervision and dehumanization) and their outcomes (i.e. knowledge hiding).

Research limitations/implications

The study provides some theoretical and practical insights by providing the explanatory and coping mechanism between continuous abusive supervision and daily knowledge hiding behavior.

Originality/value

There is a dearth of literature that has focused on daily episodes of abusive supervision, dehumanization and knowledge hiding behavior. Furthermore, the moderating role of psychological capital has also been rarely investigated.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the phenomenon of Islamic religious communication and how Islamic banks in Pakistan use religion-based communication, along with its expected outcomes.

Design/methodology/approach

Transcendental phenomenology approach is opted using a multi-stage data collection strategy consisting of observations, documentary reviews and semi-structural interviews to get deep into the phenomenon in a particular context.

Findings

Findings highlight Islamic religious communication as workplace Islamic da’wah that is majorly categorized into compulsive da’wah, objectics da’wah and impulsive da’wah, serving its role in bringing spirituality to work through work-faith integration.

Research limitations/implications

The finding of the study can be used in planning, formulating and implementing Islamic da’wah-based model to induce spirituality at work.

Originality/value

This study is the first of its type exploring Islamic da’wah in an organizational context as a mean to bring spirituality at work.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop a Workplace Islamic Da’wah (WID) scale, which measures the extent to which an organization incorporates the sharing of religious teachings at work through words and artifacts. WID is theoretically grounded in religious communication theory and is intended for use in organizational settings.

Design/methodology/approach

A sequential mixed methods approach was used to develop a scale of WID. Qualitative data were organized into constructs and items using transcendental phenomenology. These items were then refined into a multidimensional construct through expert validity, face validity, exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis.

Findings

The research findings confirm the validity and reliability of WID as a multidimensional construct, comprising compulsive da’wah, objectics da’wah and impulsive da’wah.

Research limitations/implications

This study provides implications for survey researchers interested in developing a scale using mixed methods and for practitioners who can use these findings to streamline their efforts in planning and implementing an Islamic da’wah-based model.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first of its kind, presenting the operationalization of WID that can be used for future empirical research endeavors in this and related fields.

Abstract

Purpose

Nowadays, employees are more concerned about their career and the same has become challenging for the organizations. Therefore, this study aims to highlight the importance of fun at work towards employees' career satisfaction through organizational inclusion. Further, it sheds light on how inclusive leadership moderates the association between fun at work and organizational inclusion.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used a questionnaire-based survey to collect data from 321 employees working in the information technology (IT) sector between January to March 2023. Specifically, the study used a cross-sectional time-lag design to collect data using convenience sampling.

Findings

Structural equation modeling analysis revealed that employees' perceptions of fun at work positively influence their career satisfaction. In addition, organizational inclusion mediated this association, whereas inclusive leadership strengthened the association between fun at work and organizational inclusion.

Research limitations/implications

The foremost limitation is the cross-sectional time lag design which restricts causality. However, the findings offer some implications for the management by focusing on the working environment (e.g. social gatherings, parties and celebrations), and leadership (that values employees) can create feelings of inclusion among employees which makes them feel energized and enthusiastic about their organization and career.

Originality/value

Building on evolutionary emancipatory and social exchange theory, this study highlights the importance of organizational inclusion and inclusive leadership between employees' perceptions of fun at work and career satisfaction.

Abstract

Purpose

The practice of cronyism is a pervasive problem for most businesses and a great hindrance for employees, but empirical literature on its outcomes is scant. In light of such gaps, the objective of this study is to examine the relationship between organizational cronyism and employees' silence behavior through the mediating role of felt violation and the moderating role of continuance commitment.

Design/methodology/approach

A time-lagged cross-sectional survey comprising 226 respondents is carried out in a metropolitan city of a developing country (Lahore, Pakistan). The respondents were selected using the convenience sampling technique.

Findings

The findings reveal that organizational cronyism influences employees' silence (acquiescent and quiescent) both directly and indirectly (via felt violation). However, continuance commitment was noted to work as a boundary condition only between felt violation and quiescent silence.

Research limitations/implications

Although the study deals with common method bias by collecting data in two waves, it may restrict causality. The findings not only have implications for the academicians, but also contribute to the conservation of resources theory. This study suggests organizations develop and implement a comprehensive intervention strategy that focuses on both prevention and damage control as a result of organizational cronyism.

Originality/value

Drawing upon the conservation of resources theory, this study adds value to the literature by empirically investigating the outcomes of cronyism at work. Moreover, the outcomes and mechanisms under consideration have largely been ignored in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

Building on evolutionary emancipation theory, the purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of workplace fun on employees’ scouting behavior through the serial mediation of employees’ psychological empowerment and megaphoning.

Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire survey technique is used to elicit the responses of 445 employees from service organizations.

Findings

The statistical results revealed that fun at work influences employees scouting behavior through the serial mediation of psychological empowerment and megaphoning. The direction relationship between fun and scouting was not statistically significant, thus a full mediation mechanism was proved.

Originality/value

The value of employees’ communication behavior has increased in the recent past, and it overweighs the conventional mediums (e.g. TV, radio and newspaper). But the antecedents and mechanisms through which communication behavior can be influenced are an area that has not gained researchers’ attention. This study proposes such a conceptual model and empirically tests it.

Abstract

Purpose

Since the biomedical implants with an improved compressive strength, near bone elastic modulus, controlled porosity, and sufficient surface roughness, can assist in long term implantation. Therefore, the fine process tuning plays its crucial role to develop optimal settings to achieve these desired properties. This paper aims to find applications for fine process tuning in laser powder bed fusion of biomedical Ti alloys for load-bearing implants.

Design/methodology/approach

In this work, the parametric porosity simulations were initially performed to simulate the process-induced porosity for selective laser-melted Ti6Al4V as per full factorial design. Continually, the experiments were performed to validate the simulation results and perform multiresponse optimization to fine-tune the processing parameters. Three levels of each control variable, namely, laser power – Pl (180, 190, 200) W, scanning speed – Vs (1500, 1600, 1700) mm/s and scan orientation – ϴ{1(0,0), 2(0,67°), 3(0,90°)} were used to investigate the processing performance. The measured properties from this study include compressive yield strength, elastic modulus, process-induced porosity and surface roughness. Finally, confirmatory experiments and comparisons with the already published works were also performed to validate the research results.

Findings

The results of porosity parametric simulation and experiments in selective laser melting of Ti6Al4V were found close to each other with overall porosity (less than 10%). The fine process tuning was resulted in optimal settings [Pl (200 W), Vs (1500 mm/s), ϴ (0,90°)], [Pl (200 W), Vs (1500 mm/s), ϴ (0,67°)], [Pl (200 W), Vs (1500 mm/s), ϴ (0,0)] and [Pl (200 W), Vs (1500 mm/s), ϴ (0,0)] with higher compressive strength (672.78 MPa), near cortical bone elastic modulus (12.932 GPa), process-induced porosity (0.751%) and minimum surface roughness (2.72 µm). The morphology of the selective laser melted (SLMed) surface indicated that the lack of fusion pores was prominent because of low laser energy density among the laser and powder bed. Confirmatory experimentation revealed that an overall percent improvement of around 15% was found between predicted and the experimental values.

Originality/value

Since no significant works are available on the collaborative optimization and fine process tuning in laser powder bed fusion of biomedical Ti alloys for different load bearing implants. Therefore, this work involves the comprehensive investigation and multi-objective optimization to determine optimal parametric settings for better mechanical and physical properties. Another novel aspect is the parametric porosity simulation using Ansys Additive to assist in process parameters and their levels selection. As a result, selective laser melted Ti alloys at optimal settings may help in examining the possibility for manufacturing metallic implants for load-bearing applications.
