Abstract

Purpose

The airline industry has been one of the hardest-hit industries during the Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This study aims to examine which flight attendants are likely to positively reappraise job insecurity and subsequently elevate their performance during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Design/methodology/approach

A two-wave (i.e. Time 1 and Time 2), multi-source (i.e. flight attendants and chief flight attendants) survey was conducted. The final sample consists of 408 flight attendants matched with 57 chief flight attendants. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to test the hypotheses.

Findings

Flight attendants with an organization-centered career orientation are likely to positively reappraise job insecurity and, in turn, have better job performance than those with a self-centered career orientation.

Originality/value

Flight attendants are likely to experience job insecurity during the COVID-19 crisis. This study highlights a potential positive coping mechanism that is contingent upon flight attendants’ career orientations, facilitating the interaction of the stress-coping and vocational literature in a hospitality context.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates why and when undermined employees exhibit deviant behavior toward coworkers. Drawing upon social exchange theory, coworker undermining reduces employee organization-based self-esteem (OBSE), which in turn, fosters employee negative reciprocal behavior in the form of interpersonal deviance. In addition, this study examines the moderating role of relational-interdependent self-construal (RISC) in affecting the indirect effect.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from a two-wave survey. Participants were 316 employees of a service company in western China. Ordinary least squares regressions were used to test the hypothesized relationships.

Findings

Coworker undermining is positively related to employee interpersonal deviance, mediated by decreased employee OBSE. In addition, this indirect relationship is more salient for employees with a higher than lower RISC.

Originality/value

This study suggests that employee OBSE serves as an explanation for why coworker undermining leads to employees’ antagonistic consequences. Furthermore, this study highlights the boundary-condition role of RISC in the influence process.

Abstract

Purpose

Equally weighted factors and initial data from behavioural sequences are used for calculating the degree of grey incidence in Deng’s grey incidence analysis. However, certain grey information cannot be directly obtained, and the correlation coefficients of each sequence at different times are of different importance to the system. The purpose of this paper is to propose an improved grey incidence model with new grey incidence coefficients and weighted degree of grey incidence. Some grey information can be obtained more easily by using the grey transformation sequences, and the maximum entropy method is used to calculate the weights of new grey incidence coefficients, so the new degree of grey incidence was distinguished more effectively by the proposed model.

Design/methodology/approach

New grey incidence coefficients are defined using transformation sequences of the initial data. To overcome the shortcomings arising from the use of equal weights, the maximum entropy method is proposed for determining the weights of the grey incidence coefficients. The resulting model optimises the classical models and evaluates the influencing factors more effectively. The effectiveness of the model was verified by a numerical example. Furthermore, the model was used for analysing the main influencing factors of the tertiary industry in China.

Findings

The proposed model optimises the classical models, and the application example shows that urbanisation has the greatest effect on employment in the tertiary sector.

Originality/value

An improved grey incidence model is proposed that improves the grey incidence coefficients and their weights, and has better performance than the classical models. The model was successfully used in the analysis of the influence factors of the tertiary industry in China. The results indicate that the model can reflect the significance of incidence coefficients at different time points; therefore, their fluctuation can be effectively controlled.

Abstract

Purpose

A plethora of organizational studies have found employee narcissism to be an unfavorable trait that impedes job functioning. Yet, the elevated confidence and self-assuredness associated with the narcissistic personality can also drive individuals to show initiative behavior. This paper aims to investigate how and when employees with narcissistic personalities can potentially contribute positively to effective functioning.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 91 supervisors and 273 subordinates in a corporate setting in central China. To account for the nesting effects, multilevel path analysis was conducted to test the hypotheses.

Findings

Employee narcissism is positively related to psychological ownership, which in turn is positively related to initiative behavior in the workplace. Furthermore, job meaningfulness moderates the indirect effect of employee narcissism on initiative behavior through psychological ownership. Specifically, the indirect effect is more salient when the employee perceives higher, rather than lower, job meaningfulness.

Originality/value

This study examines how employees with narcissistic personalities can show initiative at work. Specifically, this research uncovers the underlying psychological mechanism as well as the boundary condition that facilitate this process. This study affirms the importance of self-determination for narcissistic employees and sheds light on how these employees can potentially contribute positively to effective functioning. Insights for theory, practice and future research are also discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to examine the factors that influence the turnover intention of information system (IS) personnel.

Design/methodology/approach

Anchored in the theory of human capital and the theory of planned behavior, as well as an extensive review of existing turnover literature, the authors propose a novel set of variables based on the three‐level analysis framework suggested by Joseph et al. to examine IS turnover intention. At the individual level, IT certifications, IT experience, and past external and internal turnover behaviors are considered. At the firm level, industry type (IT versus non‐IT firms) and IT human resource practices regarding raise and promotion are included. Finally, at the environmental level, personal concerns about external changes characterized by IT outsourcing and offshoring are studied. The authors investigate the impact of these variables on turnover intention using a large sample of 10,085 IT professionals working in the USA.

Findings

The empirical analysis based on logistic regression indicates significant associations between the variables and turnover intention.

Research limitations/implications

Future research may be directed toward developing multiple‐item measures for better validity and reliability of the study.

Practical implications

The authors derive managerial implications that may help guide firms to formulate effective human resource management and retention policies and strategies. They include the importance of organizational support for certification programs and the retention strategy based on the three phase career life cycle of IT professionals.

Originality/value

The study shows many interesting findings, some of which contrast the existing assertions. For example, the authors cannot find the inverted U‐shaped curvilinear relationship between IT experience and turnover intention shown in previous research.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to make objective descriptions on various money‐laundering techniques and to put forward countermeasures in order to combat money laundering more effectively and efficiently.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper based on 20 simplified money‐laundering cases, describes various money‐laundering techniques, analyses the reasons why these methods prevail, and points out the future efforts to be made in the fight against money laundering.

Findings

As usual, the ways of money laundering include cash smuggling, making use of banks or insurance company, or making use of shell‐company or front‐company. Nowadays, criminals also turn to real estate, lottery, international trade, offshore company to launder money. Sometimes lawyers, accountants are exploited by money launderers. With the wide use of electronic money and internet, criminals prefer to launder money through non‐face to face transactions. The fight against money laundering is the fight between justice and evil. It is of great importance to pierce the secret veil of money laundering so that we can combat money laundering more effectively and efficiently.

Originality/value

This paper prevents a comprehensive description of, and comments on, various money‐laundering techniques and future efforts to be made in the fight against money laundering, which would be beneficial to policy makers, enforcement authorities, and judicial professionals.

Abstract

Purpose

Disruptive technologies often disrupt the careers of middle-skilled workers. The purpose of this paper is to investigate career transition strategies of middle-skilled workers that partially continue or expand their careers under the condition of disruptive technologies.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper established a conceptual framework of career transition strategies for middle-skilled workers by integrating the existing studies of disruptive technologies, technological trajectory transition, boundaryless and protean careers, and careers as repositories of knowledge.

Findings

The authors proposed three types of career transition strategies to partially prolong middle-skilled workers’ careers, namely, industry-oriented transition strategy which refers to a transfer to other occupations in the original industry, technology-oriented transition strategy which refers to a transfer to occupations with original technical skills in other industries, and comprehensive transition strategy which refers to a transfer to other occupations in the related industries. Further, this paper discusses the external conditions and individual competencies for each career transition strategy, and timing for implementing a career transition strategy from the perspective of the technology life cycle.

Originality/value

This paper focused on sustainable careers of middle-skilled workers under the condition of disruptive technologies, which received very little attention from the current literature. The findings also suggested for middle-skilled workers to develop a sustainable or long-term career in the current era of many disruptive technologies. The findings may also imply on how firms and government should contribute to help workers on handling scenarios of technological disruption.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to concern the community festival of a Jing minority village in the China–Vietnam border area. Since it was designated as a national-level Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2006, the festival has undergone many changes. The festival has steadily expanded and evolved, assuming characteristics of globalization. How is the globalized character of the Wanwei festival manifested? What are the forces behind the elevation of this local festival onto the register of national events and how did it turn into an event organized by the township?

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on the results of the author’s research on the culture of Kinh people in Wanwei from 2000 to the present. From the anthropological approach, the author mainly uses method of participant observation and in-depth interviews. The author has observed the Wanwei communal festival from 2000 to the present, interviewing about 40 villagers in Wanwei in depth, they can be leaders, intellectuals, civil servants, officials or working people.

Findings

The paper is a case study of the new aspect of globalization of a village festival. The author argues that globalization can lead to a spread of global flows but in this process of globalization, villagers also want to define the local identity, they reinvent the tradition, rewrite history, create new nuances for the gods with many different purposes. Practicing the current Wanwei village festival is a vivid example of globalization from below and the politics of tradition.

Originality/value

The paper adds a theoretical dimension to current globalization research. The paper also points out the political, economic and social dynamics that govern the transformation of a village festival in particular and the village culture in general in the border areas. The paper is a testament to the dynamism and flexibility of villagers when participating in the current globalization process.

Abstract

Purpose

Social media texts as a data source in depression research have emerged as a significant convergence between Information Management and Public Health in recent years. This paper aims to sort out the depression-related study conducted on the text on social media, with particular attention to the research theme and methods.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors finally selected research articles published in Web of Science, Wiley, ACM Digital Library, EBSCO, IEEE Xplore and JMIR databases, covering 57 articles.

Findings

(1) According to the coding results, Depression Prediction and Linguistic Characteristics and Information Behavior are the two most popular themes. The theme of Patient Needs has progressed over the past few years. Still, there is a lesser focus on Stigma and Antidepressants. (2) Researchers prefer quantitative methods such as machine learning and statistical analysis to qualitative ones. (4) According to the analysis of the data collection platforms, more researchers used comprehensive social media sites like Reddit and Facebook than depression-specific communities like Sunforum and Alonelylife.

Practical implications

The authors recommend employing machine learning and statistical analysis to explore factors related to Stigmatization and Antidepressants thoroughly. Additionally, conducting mixed-methods studies incorporating data from diverse sources would be valuable. Such approaches would provide insights beneficial to policymakers and pharmaceutical companies seeking a comprehensive understanding of depression.

Originality/value

This article signifies a pioneering effort in systematically gathering and examining the themes and methodologies within the intersection of health-related texts on social media and depression.
